🔥 About Sri Durga Suktam

Sri Durga Suktam is a celebrated Vedic hymn found in the Mahanarayana Upanishad of the Krishna Yajurveda (and Rigvedic Khila). The sacred word Durga signifies the Divine Power who delivers devotees from all impassable perils, internal vices, and worldly afflictions (Durgāṇi). In this suktam, Mother Durga is invoked in Her radiant Agni form—the self-luminous fire of divine consciousness—carrying the soul safely across the ocean of worldly suffering like a steadfast ship across turbulent waters.

Jātavedase sunavāma somamarātīyato nidahāti vedaḥ |
Sa naḥ parṣadati durgāṇi viśvā nāveva sindhuṁ duritātyagniḥ || 1 ||
Meaning: We extract and offer sacred Soma unto Jatavedas (Agni, the all-knowing Fire of Divine Consciousness). May He burn away all ill-will and hostile energies. May that supreme Agni ferry us across all impassable difficulties and perils, just as a sturdy ship carries passengers across the turbulent ocean.
Tāmagnivarṇāṁ tapasā jvalantīṁ vairocanīṁ karmaphaleṣu juṣṭām |
Durgāṁ devīṁ śaraṇamahaṁ prapadye sutarasi tarase namaḥ || 2 ||
Meaning: Unto Her who radiates with the effulgence of pure fire, who blazes with supreme spiritual austerity (tapas), brilliant with divine light, and worshipped as the bestower of the fruits of all righteous actions—unto that Durga Devi, I surrender and take refuge. Salutations unto You, O divine Mother, who effortlessly transports all souls across every obstacle!
Agne tvaṁ pārayā navyo asmān svastibhirati durgāṇi viśvā |
Pūśca pṛthvī bahulā na urvī bhavā tokāya tanayāya śaṁyoḥ || 3 ||
Meaning: O ever-lauded Agni, guide us with auspicious blessings across all difficult barriers. May our spiritual haven and the generous earth expand abundantly for our well-being. Bestow divine peace and enduring prosperity upon our children and future progeny.
Viśvāni no durgahā jātavedaḥ sindhuṁ na nāvā duritātiparṣi |
Agne atrivanmanasā gṛṇāno'smākaṁ bodhyavitā tanūnām || 4 ||
Meaning: O Jatavedas, redeemer from all perils, convey us across all distress and karmic stains just as a boat carries travelers across deep waters. O Agni, celebrated with a mind filled with spiritual contemplation like the sage Atri, be the awake and vigilant guardian of our bodies and beings.
Pṛtanājitaṁ sahamānamugramagniṁ huvema paramātsadhasthāt |
Sa naḥ parṣadati durgāṇi viśvā kṣāmaddevo ati duritātyagniḥ || 5 ||
Meaning: From the supreme celestial abode, we invoke that formidable Agni who triumphs over opposing negative forces, endures all challenges, and radiates sovereign power. May that divine Fire bear us safely beyond all perilous barriers, consuming all our sins and negativities.

Pratnoṣikamīḍyo adhvareṣu sanācca hotā navyaśca satsi |
Svāṁ cāgne tanuvaṁ piprayasvāsmabhyaṁ ca saubhāgyamāyajasva || 6 ||
Meaning: Praised since primeval times in sacred rituals, You are the timeless priest and the ever-fresh deity presiding over our offerings. Rejoice, O Agni, in Your own luminous divine presence, and bestow upon us supreme worldly and spiritual auspiciousness (Saubhagya).

Gobhirjuṣṭamayujo niṣiktaṁ tavendra viṣṇoranusañcarema |
Nākasya pṛṣṭhamabhisaṁvasāno vaiṣṇavīṁ loka iha mādayantām || 7 ||
Meaning: Blest by the sacred rays of spiritual wisdom and divine knowledge, may we traverse the path of Indra and Vishnu. Attaining citizenship in the transcendental heavens, may all blessed souls rejoice eternally in the highest realm of the Supreme Lord.
